The riviera dei fiori isn't just the blue of the sea. It's also the luxurious forest green and dark rocks of the alps. It's not only the celebrity events along the coast with the famous hotels and casino, but also the tranquillity of the countryside and old villages.

Between cape San Ampelio and cape Nero we move on to visit Ospedaletti, founded in 1300 by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. Where should we stroll, in the old village with the church of San Erasmo, an old pilgrim hospice, or in the new city among the palms, eucalyptus trees, villas and gardens? Anywhere we go is a real treat. The two Saracen Towers from the 1500s still stand guard over the coast.
Moving along the shore we reach Sanremo and from the sparkling sea we move to the chiaroscuro of the woods of San Romolo and its pine forests. But where are we, in the Dolomites?
We return to the main road and in 9 km we rise to Baiardo, with its splendid view and backtracking along itinerary no. 1 among olive and chestnut woods, we reach Castelvittorio and then Pigna. The three villages are illustrated in itinerary no.1. The road for Colle Langan winds its way up the mountain. The real beauty of this route is the surrounding nature. There are no houses, only trees. Not even people. There is silence. A world to ourselves.
From the Colle di Langan, 1127 m above sea level, we began to descend and pass through the old region of San Giovanni dei Prati, reaching the imposing slopes of mount Ceppo, at a height of 1627 m. We are now in the Alpine District. The sea is a thing of the past. Here we are surrounded by the balsamic forest air. We let it filter through the car windows and breathe in deeply.
The next town is Vignai, a place outside of time and space.By magic, we seem to have gone back centuries in time. In this enchanted world we return along the main road and 9 km later reach the Ghimbegna pass and from here to the Armea valley, where we find the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Villa, from 1200 but rebuilt in the 17th century. The inhabitants celebrate 8 September.
The valley shows off vegetable gardens and vineyards and here we find Ceriana, with medieval homes, built with dark stones, attached wall to wall and arranged on top of each other to strengthen the defences against invaders. There is a magnificent Church of the Holy Spirit, with its Renaissance interior, and the Parish Church of St. Peter with the Baroque façade. Oil presses and olive oil are other special features. The procession of the Confraternities is held during the Holy Week. Now we take to the road again. Only twelve kilometres separate us from Sanremo and its flowers.
