The origins of Castelvittorio lie in ancient times: many years ago the village had a fortified castle, lookout towers and its own walls. From the south, the wedge-shaped layout of the unconquerable settlement - positioned strategically on an outcrop of rock on the way to the upper Val Nervia - can be seen clearly; Castelvittorio appears to be hanging in the middle of the trees. Throughout the village one finds traces of the sombre-looking original military buildings and Medieval structures with their typical slate portals. The "astregu" (walled centre) encompasses everything its inhabitants need to survive: the tiny square, town hall, church and oldest private houses which are joined by covered passageways, alleys, steeply sloping lanes and flights of steps. The village's forced dependency on Pignais reflected in the legend of the bell which the inhabitants of Pigna stole from Castelvittorio; to pay them back, the villagers of Castelvittorio took away the paving stones from the square and old road which led to Pigna. Here one comes to the isolated church of the Madonna dell'Assunta di Lago Pigo, also known as Santa Maria di Nogareto (Holy Mary of the walnut wood). |
