The medieval village of Bajardo (900 meter above sea level), that can be reached through a carriage road among pine trees and chestnut woods, by crossing over Ghimbegna pass. The village, overhung by the ruins of the church of San Nicolò, is a summer vacation locality, in a panoramic position with a view overlooking the Ligurian and French Alps (an excursion to the top of Mount Ceppo is advisable). The new parish church (consecrated at the end of the nineteenth century) holds inside the fifteenth century polyptych by the Lombard painter Francesco from Verzate. The legend of the place tells about the unlucky love of the daughter of the Count of Bajardo for a sailor, tragically ended with both of them being sentenced to death on Whitsunday. From this event originates the famous celebration of "Ra Barca", during the yearly solemnity of Whitsunday, when the inhabitants of the village dance in the main square around a huge tree (almost like the mainmast of a ship) singing a ballad reminiscent of the event. |
