Divided in various towns, Diano San Pietro has its center around the parish church, with its parvis surrounded by walls, which recalls the defense system of the local populations against barbaric raids. Submitted to the authority of Diano Castello, having, however, a better strategic location, the church lost its "matrix" function (baptismal seat), maintaining nevertheless the privilege to receive prelates and priests of the entire valley for Easter and Pentecost eves. From Diano San Pietro, along the stream bearing the same name (power supply for the numerous oil mills), the road leads to Diano Borganzo that consists of several villages located on a steep slope. Here the nineteenth century parish church stands out, where is preserved the polyptych of the Madonna della Consolazione (1518) by Antonio Brea. At Roncagli, a smaller agglomerate, the bridge of medieval origin over Rio San Pietro leads to the versant of Virgili and towards Diano Arentino. |
